FREE: Hockenheim Race 2 1996 to be Premiered on Facebook and YouTube
This timeless classic from Germany will hit the screens again this Sunday, so you can relive some thrilling, vintage final lap battling from the WorldSBK archives!
As the pause in action of the 2020 MOTUL FIM Superbike World Championship continues, it is time for another premiere across our Facebook and YouTube platforms. This Sunday at 4.30pm CET (GMT +2), it’ll be the turn of the thrilling 1996 Hockenheimring event with focus on Race 2, as Carl Fogarty took his first victory for Honda ahead of teammate and rival Aaron Slight. This Honda 1-2 is part of the “Weekend of Honda” package, as Honda successes are celebrated across WorldSBK’s channels.
The second race of the 1996 German round was an all-time classic and is a race that is still revered today by notable names within the WorldSBK paddock. The titanic 14-lap, 95km battle saw hard action from start to finish, with five riders leading the race: Pierfrancesco Chili from Paolo Casoli, Aaron Slight, John Kocinski and Carl Fogarty, with others in the leading group. Soon, Casoli would be dropped and Chili would retire with a mechanical issue leaving it to the Castrol Honda pairing of Fogarty and Slight to take the challenge to Kocinski. On the final lap, ‘Foggy’ broke through and stormed through into the stadium. Slight tried to fight back whilst Kocinski was pushed back to third, but come the finish line, it was Foggy’s win by just 0.300s in one of his greatest victories.
You can also enjoy other classic races that we’ve premiered on our YouTube Channel. The all-time classic of Imola in 2002 and Race 2 is ready and waiting, as is Tom Sykes’ title-clinching moment from Jerez Race 1, 2013. Neil Hodgson’s first win in front of 100,000 home fans at Donington Park in 2000 in Race 2 is also there, whilst the latest one to enjoy is the Battle of Buriram from Race 2 in 2016, when Tom Sykes defeated Jonathan Rea in an epic last lap shootout. There’s also the awesomeness of Race 1 at Assen in 2009, with a head-to-head final lap dogfight between Ben Spies and Noriyuki Haga and the first title for an Italian in WorldSBK, with Max Biaggi at Imola in Race 2, 2010.
